Buffalo Grove and vicinity art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to check out top homegrown talent right in their own neighborhood. During the month of February, the Buffalo Grove Artist’s League will showcase work from approximately 20 member artists at the Indian Trails Public Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road in Wheeling.
The show is just one way the League supports its members and reaches out to the community. “The Artist’s League inspires other artists and drives them along,” says Sharon Borstein, volunteer Buffalo Grove arts commissioner and a founder of the group. “The league also provides additional knowledge for artists and lets these artists get involved within their community.”
Borstein, who lives
in Buffalo Grove, knew
the need and enthusiasm for a community artists group was strong. So, she says, “In addition to education and networking purposes, the Buffalo Grove Artist’s League was formed to raise the visibility of visual artists within the community.”
Art variety
The exhibit includes wide range of arts and styles. Photography — from abstract to nature shots — watercolors, jewelry, sculpture, pastels and even digital art are on display.
Larry Friedman of Buffalo Grove is one of the artists who will have his work on display. A retired veterinarian, Friedman’s photography portfolio consists of landscapes of such places as Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, as well as vibrant, close-up floral photography and floral impressionistic photography. Much of it was done in Wyoming, where he lived for 23 years.
Friedman is originally from Chicago and has received many awards including the Wyoming Arts Council Fellowship. He began his career in black and white landscapes studying such photographers such as Ansel Adams, but now includes much color photography in his portfolio. including floral photography. Friedman also has a commercial photography business. His portfolio can be viewed at www.wildernessconceptsphoto.com.
Randy Karey, also of Buffalo Grove, works in pastels, which he describes as “the most pure medium there is —it’s the purest form of color.”
Pastel charm
For 18 years Karey was primarily a watercolorist until a few years ago when his wife bought him a pastel kit. Using that, he discovered, “there’s a certain charm to pastels, with a lot of optical blending and layering and blending of colors.” His subjects include figurative drawings and still lifes, although he does draw many pet portraits too.
An art director and graphic designer by trade, Karey enjoys describes his work as “peaceful and serene” and hopes viewers of his work will enjoy the beauty of design, shapes and colors and how he manipulates the light in his work.
For more information about Karey visit his website at www.randykarey.com.
New members are always welcome in the league, which meets the last Monday evening of each month, usually at the Buffalo Grove Village Hall at 50 Raupp Blvd. For more information call (847) 459-2518 or email bgarts@vbg.org.
