In the beginning, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice intended “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” for schoolchildren. Then it was enhanced and became a hit Broadway musical that is frequently performed across the country.
Nearly 45 years since its premiere, the Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences is taking the musical back to its roots, 10 a.m. most Tuesdays-Saturdays Feb. 22-May 12 at 10 Marriott Dr., Lincolnshire.
“We thought, ‘Why don’t people do it as a kids’ show?’ ” said Aaron Thielen, Marriott’s lead artistic director. Marriott answered that question by creating a production to which kids can relate. For example, the show’s Elvis-like king looks and sings more like Justin Bieber.
“The music is the same. We’re not changing any story line,” Thielen said. “It’s simply done in a contemporary way. People will be wearing clothes you might see on the street or in a music video. All the actors on stage play instruments.”
Tickets are $15.
