It’s interesting each year to see what theme the Highrollers bowling league chooses for team names. This season’s theme is movie titles.
The first-place team as of midseason was The Sting. Congratulations to team members Sam Gevirtz, Babs Toslosky, Ed Feldman and Jim Halas. When the second half began in early January, there was a six-way tie for first place.
Individual achievements include Bob Hislop and Rob Lindsey leading the men’s high scratch series, and Alice Griffin and Babs Toslosky leading for the women. High scratch games go to Bob Obernesser, Christ Fosbinder, Lauren Fosbinder and Carol Erker. High handicap series goes to Bob Jessen, Richard Drexler, Bonnie Keck and Laura Jessen. High handicap games go to Phil Busby, Nick Johnson, Kay Gillespie and Laurie Feldman.
Subs are always needed and appreciated. Contact Rob Lindsey for more information.
In the works
A new year means new projects at LBS. I recently found out about them from Steve Wyland, our public works director.
The main project and largest capital project in community history is replacement of the secondary digester at the sewage treatment plant. The structure of the digester is nearly 40 years old and has been maintained well past its expected service life. The existing above-ground steel tank will be demolished and replaced with a larger, concrete, partially below-grade tank. Bids have been submitted and work is scheduled to begin in April.
Reconstruction of the existing six asphalt tennis courts into four asphalt tennis courts, four bocce courts and a multisport court is also expected to begin in April. Proposals for the work should be coming in this month.
The beauty of these projects is that they were included in the 2012 budget and will be paid for out of capital reserves, thus there is no need for additional special assessments.
Speaking of beauty, snow’s beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some would say it is most beautiful when it is not coming down. That was our situation in December and early January, and because of the lack of snow, the public works department has only used 17 percent of its annual snow removal budget thus far.
Busy days
Next week’s functions offer residents a variety of things to do.
At 3 p.m. Feb. 12 the Sailing Association will sponsor a winter training session in the rec center’s lower level. Participants will learn water safety and boat handling for all watercraft on Lake Barrington. Bring an appetizer to pass and your beverage of choice. A buffet supper will be provided by the Sailing Association. Contact Dan Brockman to reserve your spot.
On Feb. 13 the Ladies Club’s coffee will feature Edith Maynard of the Conversation Club exploring Valentine’s Day. She will present fun and little-known facts about the romantic holiday. Refreshments start at 10:30 a.m. in the rec center lounge. A $2 donation will be collected at the door.
February is heart month at LBS and on Feb. 16 the Wauconda Fire Department will provide blood pressure screenings from 6 to 7 p.m. in the ballroom. Kellie Hartman, from Wauconda Healthcare and Rehabilitation, will speak about healthy hearts at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Community Affairs Commission and is free to all residents.
