Barrington OKs contract for 2012 roads program

Updated: February 27, 2012 8:41AM

The Barrington Village Board approved a contract with Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. Monday in the amount of $57,700 for 2012 road and utility program design and engineering services.

Gewalt Hamilton has provided these services to the village for many years and has already completed the surveying previously approved for the 2012 road and utility program. Every year, the village rates its roads on 10 different categories to come up with a list of priority roads for the year.

“Some roads deteriorate faster and some do not,” said Greg Summers, director of engineering and building.

On this year’s list for design and engineering services are: Bellingham Drive, from Wyngate Drive to Kings Row; Kings Row, from Bellingham Drive to Balmoral Lane; Balmoral Lane, from Kings Row to Ela Road; Tudor Lane, from Balmoral Lane to the cul-de-sac; Old Mill Court, from the cul-de-sac to Red Barn Lane; Old Mill Road, from South Valley Road to the dead end; Warwick Street, from Kainer Avenue to Eastern Avenue; Orchard Drive, from Tower Road to Sunset Road; Shady Lane, from Forest Drive to the cul-de-sac; Russell Street, from Summit Street to Prairie Avenue; Lake Zurich Road, from the railroad tracks to Flint Creek; Northwest Highway Alley, from Cumnor Avenue to Exmoor Avenue; South Hager Avenue water main replacement, from Main Street to the dead end; Eastern Avenue water main replacement, from Main Street to Northwest Highway; and Dundee Road water main replacement, from the Motor Werks entrance to Grove Avenue.

Road work can range from complete road reconstruction including new curbs, new base and new road to just a grind and resurface of the asphalt, but road repairs vary, Summers said.

The services provided by Gewalt Hamilton will provide village staff with the engineer’s opinion of probable cost. Staff can then use that information to put together a bid package that fits within the village’s budget for the project, Summers said.

The village has roughly $900,000 available from the general fund for road work and roughly $800,000 from the water and sewer fund for utility work. Summers said depending on Gewalt Hamilton’s estimates, all road and utility work targeted for this year may not fit within the budget. Any road or utility projects removed from this year’s program would be put as top priority next year, Summers said.

Staff plans to put the projects out for bid in early spring with work to begin in summer.
