The 2011-12 Barrington High School varsity cheerleading team had a steady climb this season to a second-place finish at state. The team began its competitive season in December with fifth and third place finishes at Belvidere North and Rolling Meadows, and spent their winter break in Barrington, working hard on their routine.
The team placed fourth in the Mid Suburban League, which was far below their goal, but helped the team make some important changes in their routine to ensure later success. The team placed 5th at Grayslake North in mid-January, receiving some valuable feedback from judges that allowed the team to focus for its last regular season competition at Huntley. The team won the Huntley Invitational by a large margin. The varsity cheerleaders advanced to sectionals at Rolling Meadows, placing first against very strong competition, with a perfect routine. This top five finish at sectionals locked in the team’s place at the IHSA State Competition at Illinois State University this past weekend.
The team had a shaky start in the semifinal round at State on Friday. However their difficult skill level still helped it claim a place in the final round on Saturday, among the top 10 teams. The routine in finals on Saturday was perfect in every aspect. They stuck every skill with confidence. I am extremely pleased with their growth over time and their successful finish. They have made Barrington proud!
