BARRINGTON — Harper College’s Fashion Merchandising students, including Barrington High School graduate Shannon Kraft, will soon launch a unique on-campus boutique.

The store, named Studio V, will feature hand-crafted items from students, and community members can submit items for sale as well.

Items will include garments from fashion professors; jewelry made by fashion students; works from Harper’s ceramics studio; printed cards from the Graphic Arts Department; and CD recordings from music professors.

Cheryl Turnauer, chair of Harper’s fashion program, explained that the boutique will serve as a teaching lab for merchandising students. She added that the store will offer an always-evolving inventory, featuring everything from one-of-a-kind clothing to photography and handcrafted furniture.

Artists will keep 80 percent of the sale, organizers said, with the rest going to the fashion program.

“This is a win for everyone,” she said. “Our merchandising students get the invaluable experience of launching and running a real retail location, vendors get an added venue — or maybe the first-ever venue — for their work, and the public gets a sensational shopping opportunity.”

The store is housed in Harper’s Building V on the west side of campus. The grand opening is will be Nov. 29, and hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
