SOUTH BARRINGTON — Here we are again at the start of another year!

I hope your holidays were enjoyable and wish all my readers a Happy New Year.

A belated shout out to South Barrington resident, Jackie Kapcheck, and her committee for organizing the Barrington Junior Women Club’s ‘Hope for the Holidays’ dinner at The Lucky Monk Restaurant in December. Approximately 60 women attended and enjoyed a fun ladies night out with cocktails, dinner and raffle prizes. More than $1,400 was raised that night to support BJWC and Barrington Giving Day. Each year, BJWC collects donations for toys, arranges the tables and works with the families that participate in Barrington Giving Day. Way to go ladies!

If you are looking for a way to get out of the house and warm up, the Arboretum of South Barrington is once again hosting its annual Chilly Challenge from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. I went last year with my son and some friends, and it was a lot of fun.

Registration begins at Pinstripes at 12:30 p.m., and then continues on to six other restaurants in the Arboretum, including Georgio’s, iPic Salt Restaurant, Coopers Hawk, Ruth’s Chris, L’Eiffel Bistro and Potbelly. Each restaurant serves its own style of chili and guests vote on which chili they feel has the best flavor. Admission is just $10 per person this year, so it is very reasonable. Guests may purchase their own drinks at each place.

Also, on Saturday, there is a ‘Tax Free Shopping Day’ at the Arboretum in celebration of the decrease in Cook County’s sales tax rate. Participating stores will have a sign on the door. Some of the stores that are already signed up include Chico’s, Bamboo Spoon, Acquisitions, Francesca’s Collections and Claire’s Boutique. This might be a great time to get out those holiday gift cards!

Since I am starting my fourth year writing this column representing the residents of South Barrington, I want to thank my readers and especially those who have contacted me with news to share.

I invite anyone in South Barrington to contact me to let me know what is going on in your neighborhood, family or business.

It is always a pleasure to meet new people and hear about what you are doing. My email is bhuva5@comcast.net. Thank you!
