Smoke odor at Barrington school blamed on heating system

Barrington area firefighters were called to Roslyn Road Elementary School Tuesday morning due to reports of smoke in classrooms.
An emergency alert notice was sent at 8:09 a.m. for the school, located at 224 Roslyn Road in Barrington.
Jeff Arnett, chief communications officer for District 220, reported that there was no fire or injuries. He said the school’s heating system overheated, which created “an acrid smoke smell in a kindergarten classroom,” the district’s Facebook page added.
Referencing the frigid temperatures, Arnett attributed the malfunction to a heating system working overtime.
Arnett said there weren’t many students in the building at 8 a.m. School officials moved those who were to another wing of the building after the odor was noticed.
Classes began as scheduled later Tuesday morning.
“The fire department quickly arrived to determine the cause of the smell,” according to the district’s Facebook post. “The source was immediately determined and a fire was averted. Roslyn Road is open for students to safely attend today.”
