WAUCONDA — Firefighters rescued an ATV rider who plunged through the ice on Bangs Lake.

Rescuers responding to a 911 call arrived at Bangs Lake in Wauconda on Thursday night to find a 30-year-old man floating by hanging on to the tires of the ATV.

Wauconda Fire District Battalion Chief Bill Hoover says four rescuers in special winter weather gear had to walk about a half-mile out into the icy lake. They used an inflatable raft to pull the man back to shore.

WBBM radio reports the man was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

A friend of the man had placed the 911 call, and fire officials said he was right to summon help before attempting a rescue on his own.
