Barrington D-220 board, teachers face Thursday deadline

BARRINGTON — The District 220 Board of Education and the local teachers union were unable to come to an agreement Wednesday night — the last scheduled negotiation before state-mandated deadlines regulate the process.
Both sides now have until 5 p.m. Thursday to submit their last and final offers to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board.
The bargaining team representing the teachers — the Barrington Education Association — declared an impasse in negotiations Jan. 24.
According to the state timeline, there is now a seven-day window until both side’s last and final offers are made public by the labor relations board.
To try and reach an agreement before those offers are released, the teachers union and School Board have agreed to meet again on Friday and Tuesday.
Those negotiations could help bring a settlement before the strike timeline starts. If no deal has been reached within 14 days of the offers being made public, the teachers union may vote to initiate a work stoppage.
The union would have to file a formal “Notice of Intent to Strike” at least 10 days prior to a work stoppage. The earliest date that a strike could go into effect is Feb. 21.
In a statement on the district website, the School Board reiterated that the looming timeline does not mean a strike is imminent. Officials on both sides have said they remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached.
The two sides have met regularly since last Spring. Teachers have been working under the terms of an expired contract since August.
A federal mediator was called in last month to assist in the discussions.
