BARRINGTON — Taking note of the many runners and triathletes in the area, the husband and wife team of Leanne and Mark Konicek opened the Barrington Running Company in the downtown last year.
“This town needed a running store, so the first year has been a really positive experience,” said Leanne Konicek, who runs the store and personal training facility with her husband.
The Barrington Running Company offers dozens of brands of shoes, gear and other products, including lines of triathlon apparel.
But the company’s focus goes beyond retail.
Its staff specializes in fitting athletes in the right shoes. Leanne Konicek explained that she and her husband have been to Barrington High School and both District 220 middle schools to help student-athletes find the right shoe.
“We do gait analysis to fit kids into the right shoe for their biomechanics,” Konicek said. “We want to put people in the shoes that are right for them.”
The Konicek’s and their team also offer personal training. The owners, both Barrington natives, are triathlete coaches themselves.
“It’s a good mix of men and women of all different ages,” Leanne Konicek said.
The store is laid out with all merchandise in the front with the back rooms reserved for fitness classes and one-on-one personal training sessions. The Barrington Running Company offers group classes like Zumba and boot camp, which Konicek describes as a full body workout, several times a week. The store also employs an in-house nutritionist to advise customers and clients.
The Triad Youth Speed Program, geared toward teens and young adults, is an offshoot of boot camp, training young people in agility, strength and conditioning.
Most group classes for kids and adults are offered in the early morning as well as early evening to accommodate work and school schedules.
Since opening the store last July, Konicek has found the busiest time of year to be the fall, particularly the weeks leading up to the Chicago Marathon.
“Barrington Hills is a great place to train with all the hills,” Konicek said.
“We’ve always had a personal training business and we felt there was a need in Barrington,” Konicek added. “We’re both athletic and we like working with people. We’re just passionate about the store.”
