Merchants present at the monthly Village Merchant Breakfast Meeting on Jan. 18 raved about the trolley made available for Barrington’s holiday celebrations in December.

“They loved the trolley and the whole concept,” said Maria Straussner, marketing director of Ice House Mall, 200 Applebee St., Barrington. “(Merchants) would love to see that more than just the holiday weekend.”

On Dec. 3, 2011, the Barrington Chamber of Commerce sponsored a trolley for Barrington’s annual holiday celebrations.

The trolley picked passengers up on South Cook Street and made stops at the Ice House Mall, Lageschulte Street and the Foundry Shopping Center.

Straussner said merchants would love to see the trolley offered throughout the year and for other special events.

During the first meeting of the new year, Anne Garrette, marketing and events coordinator for the village of Barrington, reviewed the holiday events held in December.

“We want to make sure the events we chose are having impact,” she said.

Garrette highlighted the Celebrate Barrington Holiday Sweepstakes, which generated 1,868 entry cards from residents in the 60010 zip code and neighboring communities.

There were also several entries from out-of-state residents.

The Celebrate Barrington Sweepstakes allowed people who visited local businesses to submit an entry card for a drawing to win Barrington Shopping Dollars.

Merchants also looked forward to upcoming events, including the Feb. 11 Love Barrington Family FunFest at Langendorf Park featuring crafts and activities for kids; a Winter Wine Walk from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on March 3, organized by merchants; Celtic Fest during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, headquartered at McGonigal’s Pub, 105. S. Cook St.; the Barrington Antique and Garden Show March 15-17 at Ice House Mall; and the Barrington Art Fest held in the village during Memorial Day weekend.

Also returning this year is Barrington Area United Way’s Barrington Roundup Public Art Exhibit. The United Way is looking for sponsors and artists for the painted horses.

The horses will be publicly displayed throughout the village June through August, with a public auction in September. For more information, visit bauw.org.

“People look forward to it,” said Dee Dee Gallagher-Johnson, United Way Board Member and artistic director and instructor for Bataille Academie of the Danse in Barrington.
