Registration begins April 21 for Barrington Junior Women’s Club (BJWC) 2010 Safety Town. During the two-week sessions, June 11-22 and July 16-27, children attend classes Monday through Friday for 2.5 hours each day at The Orchard Church in Barrington (formerly Health World). Two class times offered during each session are 9-11:30 a.m and 12:20-3 p.m. Safety Town is an educational summer program sponsored by BJWC where a variety of important safety lessons are taught through participation and demonstrations. Safety topics covered include pedestrian, motorist, fire, bicycle, water, poison, electrical, animal, and playground safety, as well as stranger danger. Children also review their address and phone number and how to properly use 911 for an emergency. An integral part of this program is the Safety Town permanent site located at The Orchard Church in Barrington (formerly Health World). The site was built in 1997 through community support. This miniature town allows children hand-on opportunities to practice and apply the safety lesson taught during the two week session. Educate the Children asks its loyal contributors and the general public to visit www.educatechildren.org, to see the work the organization has been doing and to contribute to its cause. The organization is also looking for ideas and input on how to help local children who are behind their fellow students academically. There are a number of tutoring programs and homework help resources available for each grade level. However, these fail to guide and coach those students who have already fallen behind several years. The Hough Chess Club, 310 S. Hough St., Barringon hosts its Annual Chess Tournament/Charitable Fundraiser Feb. 25. At the first tournament, the club raised money to finance reconstructive surgery for 5-year-old Meher in India, who was badly burned when her mosquito netting caught fire. The next year, the tournament raised money to send her to school. All money collected from the tournament will be donated to this cause. Stop by Hough anytime from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday for a snack or lunch by Gourmet Cook Zein Bertacchi. All concession proceeds go toward Meher’s tuition. Play in the chess tournament. Citizens for Conservation’s Community Education Committee presents its second winter program for 2012 on Feb. 25. Speaker is Michael Redmer of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will talk about two very dissimilar animals that use the wetlands in “A Tale of Two Wetland Creatures.” Redmer discusses the frogs and turtles that live in Barrington-area wetlands. Scholarships
The Norwegian National League of Chicago offers scholarships and cash prizes to deserving students who are of Norwegian heritage residing in the counties of Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, McHenry and Will. First scholarship is $1,000 to be awarded to a high chool senior with a minimum of 3.0 GPA and who has been accepted by a college or university. A $200 cash prize will be awarded to a high school student in grades nine to eleven and a $50 cash prize awarded to a student in grades fifth through eighth. A $25 cash prize will be awarded to a student in grades first through fourth. Older students must submit an original essay on a Norwegian topic and the students in grades first through fourth must submit an original drawing depicting a Noregian topic. The Friends of Volo Bog is offering an Entering College scholarship and a Continuing College scholarship, for $1,000 each, to outstanding students interested in pursuing an environmental career. To be eligible for the Entering College Scholarship the applicant must reside in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will County, attend a high school in one of these counties, have a minimum B average for the first three years, and plan to attend an accredited college or university. The applicant should be planning to enter a career directly related to preserving the environment. Applications are due by March 31 each year for the following school year to begin in fall. To be eligible for the Continuing College scholarship the applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursing a degree directly related to preserving the environment, have a permanent residence in Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will County, have graduated from a high school from one of these counties with a minimum B average, and currently hold a minimum B average in their college studies.
