A 51-year-old nurse at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital died early Wednesday morning after she was struck by a plow truck outside the Barrington hospital, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
A red Ford F-450 truck with a snowplow attached was driving in reverse in a hospital parking lot when Diane Shogren of Ingleside was struck.
She died at the scene just after arriving at work around 5:30 a.m., Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd said.
The Rev. Fred Rajan, the hospital’s vice president for mission and spiritual care, said Shogren was a longtime and well-respected Good Shepherd employee.
“She has contributed significantly to the health and well-being of the ministry and the hospital,” he said during a brief press conference at the hospital Wednesday evening.
“This is a compassionate community so it has really affected us,” Rajan added. “We have made every effort to care for our associates, the immediate family of the associate we lost, and we are here to do the best we can as a compassionate community.”
Officials said it was snowing heavily and there was limited visibility at the time of the incident. The truck’s safety equipment, including amber lights, reverse lights and a back-up alarm, were functioning following the incident, police said.
The male driver also is an employee of the hospital, located at 450 Route 22. When asked if the driver would face disciplinary action, Rajan only said the investigation is ongoing.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with our associate’s family and our Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital family. We are working closely with our chaplains and social workers to offer spiritual and emotional support at this difficult time. One of our top priorities is to provide a safe environment for patients to heal and associates to work. To that end, we will continue to partner with all parties to investigate what occurred and to take all necessary steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” the hospital said in a statement.
The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
