Holy Cross students volunteer

Updated: November 12, 2012 6:09AM

Sept. 14 proved to be a great celebration of service at Holy Cross School.

It was the school’s feast day and the students and faculty chose to celebrate with a series of meaningful service projects.

All School: Collected items to donate to Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter

Pre-Kindergarten: Made doggie treats for the animal shelter

Kindergarten and first grade: Decorated bags for the Thanksgiving Food Drive, made holiday cards for seniors and soldiers, and made place mats for Catholic School’s Week Pancake Breakfast

Second grade: Created books on CDs for the children of St. Malachy and decorated place mats for the after school reception

Third grade: Baked cookies and made lemonade for the after school reception

Fourth and fifth grade: Cut down buckthorn in Ryerson Woods

Sixth grade: Made sandwiches for a community soup kitchen

Seventh and eighth grade: Packed food at the Feed My Starving Children Warehouse

This fall, Holy Cross junior high students also visited Feed My Starving Children, a Christian charity located in Schaumburg. The agency packs nutritious food and sends it to needy people across the globe. Students worked in teams to measure, pack and seal more than 11,000 meals. Not only was this a necessary and productive task, but it was fun as well. Many students have committed to returning with their own families.
