Two Barrington students among 12 Lake County pupils in running for spelling bee title

Twelve sectional winners, including two from Barrington, will compete in the Lake County Final Spelling Bee at the College of Lake County on March 20.

The finalists survived three sectional spelling bees Feb. 25 through Feb. 28 which saw students from 125 public and non-public schools in Lake County participating in the contests co-sponsored by the Lake County Regional Office of Education and the Jelly Belly Candy Co.

One final Lake County winner, from the 7 p.m. finale in Room C005 on March 20, will win a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., to compete May 26 through June 1. All expenses for the seven-day trip will be paid cooperatively by the Regional Office of Education and Jelly Belly.

The 12 finalists include:

Ani Nuthalapati, Meridian Middle School, Buffalo Grove; Marianne Gunnarsson, Northwood Junior High School, Highland Park; Brandon Hao, Arnett C. Lines Elementary School, Barrington; Pranav Sivakumar, Barrington Middle School-Station Campus, Barrington.

Victoria Amponsah, Most Blessed Trinity Academy, Waukegan; Josh Smoron, Viking Middle School, Gurnee; Matthew Tantengco, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Waukegan; Spencer Vang, Oak Grove School, Green Oaks.

Sky Aubel, Gavin South Junior High School, Ingleside; Andrew Butler, B.J. Hooper School, Lindenhurst; Nathan Metz, Woodland Middle School, Gurnee; Elijah Murcia, John T. Magee Middle School, Round Lake.
