North Shore’s first recovery high school to open in Lake Bluff

The area’s first high school for teens recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders or other mental health issues will open in Lake Bluff June 3. Newport Academy Day School will be the first recovery high school serving Chicago’s North Shore teens, age 15 to 19.

BARRINGTON — A team of students at Station Middle School recently outshined schools from across the country by winning both the Illinois Scholastic Bowl and the National Academic Quiz Bowl championships. “I’ve never had a team win a state championship let alone a national one,” said Station scholastic bowl coach Jeff Price, who has coached numerous teams from several schools in the area. Price said the 15-member team competed in several tournaments throughout the year— and won every single one. Young docents bring Observatory to life Students in Harper College’s Henize Observatory Student Docent Program participate in weekly after-school activities ranging from Girl Scouts to basketball. But every Saturday, they meet to fuel their common curiosity of the cosmos. Barrington High School students Kathleen Curran of Barrington and Jennifer Flannery of Lake Barrington have both been named a Golden Apple Scholar of Illinois for 2013. They are among 135 students to be selected. The program provides tuition assistance to each future teacher while they pursue an undergraduate education at one of 53 Illinois universities. Most importantly, throughout their undergraduate years Scholars participate in a comprehensive series of pre-student-teaching internships, mentoring and course work on the art of teaching delivered by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers. As potentially ludicrous as this concept may appear, it works beautifully in the popular show “Honk,” by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles, which is being presented at 7 p.m. April 25-27, and at 2 p.m. April 28 at Barrington Middle School Station Campus, 215 Eastern Avenue, Barrington. BARRINGTON — A “worldly” aural journey into global music was presented March 12 by the Barrington High School Choral Department, directed by Nancie Tobison and Bonnie Spurling. Professor honored for environmental work For five years, Harper College students have cut brush, pulled weeds and restored living spaces for living things as volunteers with local environmental organizations. Now a Barrington-based group is honoring the professor who inspired them. Craig Stettner, an associate professor of biology who also oversees Harper’s Environmental Club, has been named the winner of this year’s William H. Miller Conservation Award, the highest honor bestowed by the 42-year-old Citizens for Conservation organization.
