Very little has separated Barrington and Schaumburg all season.
The Broncos celebrated a one-point, buzzer-beating win in December at Schaumburg, setting up Friday night’s pivotal MSL West contest as both teams entered at 4-1 in conference play.
Then the same storyline played out Friday, with Schaumburg again clinging to a one-point lead with less than 10 seconds to play.
On this night, however, the Saxons were able to deny Broncos point guard Brad Zaumseil on two last second attempts under the basket. Schaumburg sealed the win, 49-46, after two game clinching free throws.
While the margin never grew above five points through three quarters, it appeared Schaumburg (14-4, 5-1) would cruise to the win after a 14-4 explosion to open the fourth.
Schaumburg senior Christian Spandiary (game-high 17 points) and junior Jimmy Lundquist (10 points) sparked the Saxons’ fourth-quarter run. Each connected on three-pointers and hoops in the lane to rack up a quick 10 points. Junior Kyle Bolger then closed out Barrington with two free throws, finishing the game with 13.
Barrington (12-7, 4-2) offered a late rally, closing within one point but could not convert on three last second chances. Zaumseil scored the game-winner as time expired in Barrington’s December win over Schaumburg, but could not find a clear shot Friday.
Barrington offered a balanced scoring attack. John Schneider, Mark Bennett and Zaumseil all scored 11 apiece.
The road win puts the Saxons in control of the conference with four games left on the MSL schedule.
