It was really the perfect play.

That special player in Barrington’s lineup, Nicole Collins, got in a perfect position to take a charge Friday night against Conant. The senior took on that offensive player and hit the floor just as instructed. Alas, also hitting the floor was her head.

The good news is she will be all right.

Collins attended the Sweet 16 games at Lake Zurich on Saturday. But she wasn’t quite ready to play. No doubt watching game one against state power Marist was no fun for her. Put it this way, this once-beaten club went on a 17-0 run in the first quarter against the Fillies (12-15). The final of game 1 of this day was 55-18.

“We missed Nicole,” said Barrington coach Babbi Barriero. “Collins is our leader but others have to step up. We still have to execute things.”

Still missing Collins that night, the Barrington offense made an amazing 43-point improvement in game 2 of the day. Again it was another powerful opponent in Fenwick.

Three Fillies scored in double figures in the 79-61 loss to the Friars. Those double-figure scorers included Brooke Gunderson (13 points), K.D. Madden (12 points) and Alexa Resch (12 points).

So it wasn’t exactly a great weekend for the Fillies. That 38-32 loss to Conant on Friday night started an 0-3 run. Now the Fillies can turn their attention to the upcoming Palatine Sectional and the Libertyville Regional. Their first-round playoff game is against Prospect at 8:10 p.m. Feb. 14.

“We have confidence in our ability to play with anyone in the sectional,” Barriero said. “Prospect has some nice players so we’ll have to do our homework.”

Barrington is the 11th seed in the sectional. The top four seeds are Fremd, Rolling Meadows, Libertyville and Stevenson.

There wasn’t much to feel good about for Fillies fans in game 1 on Saturday. On the first basket of the fourth quarter, Marist held a 50-10 lead.

“We are playing hard but not making good decisions,” Barriero said. “We have to get better at that.”

Maddie Bartz led the Fillies with six points. Resch added four points.

The challenge of taking on Fenwick could have overcome Barrington on Saturday night. However, the Fillies clearly played better in this game.

Barrington allowed three Fenwick players to combine for 10 three-pointers but again scoring more than 60 points was something to build on. Sophomore Angie Kirchoff helped the offense with nine points. Brooke Fanslow contributed six points.

The Fillies meet two good teams this week. Tuesday’s scheduled foe is Fremd, while at 6 p.m. Friday, Barrington hosts Palatine as part of a boys-girls doubleheader.
