Sometimes one takedown, and the ability to ride an opponent, means all the difference in having a state medal hung around your neck.

Barrington’s Coord Wiseman placed sixth at 145 pounds in the IHSA Class 3A state finals on Saturday, securing his medal with a 3-0 win over Maine West’s Rico Zayas in the consolation quarterfinals.

Wiseman finished 3-3 in one of the tournament’s toughest weight classes to earn a place on Champaign’s coveted awards stand in his junior season.

“We knew there was a possibility that Coord could medal Downstate, but that he would have to wrestle really, really well,” said Barrington coach Ken Hoving. “He did. He stepped up his game and beat some very tough kids.”

Wiseman opened the state-meet finals with a 4-0 decision over Javie Hopson of Joliet West before losing to eventual state runner-up Bryce Brill of Mount Carmel. He needed two wins in the wrestleback round to secure a medal, and he did so with a 6-3 win over Glenbard West’s Jack Carlson, and then the medal-clinching win over Zayas.

“Coord got a big takedown, and we know in those types of matches if you get a takedown you can be sitting pretty,” Hoving said. “He had a takedown and an escape, then he was good on his feet and stingy on the mat. He rode Zayas really well.”

Wiseman lost his consolation semifinal match to third-place finisher Colin Holler of Sandburg, and took sixth after a losing a decision to Jordan Rathje of Buffalo Grove, who also topped Wiseman on the title mat at this year’s Mid-Suburban League tournament.

The IHSA tournament annually chews up and spits out many of the state’s best wrestlers, and a few of Barrington’s six state qualifiers were among them.

Jared Parvinmehr placed sixth at 113 on Saturday, but at a high cost. The Broncos’ senior was slammed by Joliet Central’s Trayvon Zabala in their quarterfinal match, and while the win guaranteed Parvinmehr a medal, he was unable to wrestle for the rest of the tournament, and injury defaulted his way to sixth place.

“That was extremely unfortunate,” Hoving said. “He’ll miss the team sectional, but if we make it downstate he should be cleared to wrestle. With concussions, they have to make sure he sits out a certain amount of time. He feels fine but he has to be completely symptom-free for a certain amount of days.”

Also competing at State for Barrington were Adrian Gonzalez (106), Kevin Conrad (126), Cameron Thomson (170) and Ben Calamari (285).

Conrad lost his first match in overtime, while Gonzalez, Thomson, and Calamari all reached the wrestleback round before losing.
